2014, the research – project

When I heard the reality of Esch-Belval It came me immediately to mind the requalification of Sesto San Giovanni in Milan, Italy. In Milan's suburbswas raised a large industrial center based on major companies, with the presence of large factories and warehouses. After the Second World War it was called "city of the Resistance", and then "city of factories". In the 60's the city was expanding and the industries modernizing, so the companies of Sesto San Giovanni left their facilities, causing urban decay and leaving a big wound in the city. Consequently in the 80's were planned urban renewal projects for brownfields. Workplaces were transformed into consumption, meeting and cultural places. It was the post-modernism, still ongoing across Europe to recover abandoned areas near or inside the city.

After i discovered BeHave i felt a bond with Sesto San Giovanni. I saw on Google Esch-Belval City's pictures, I felt almost forced to devote to weaken the terrifying shadow of the monster that lives within the urban area. Despite the desire of the distance from each other, the two entities are together, but they do not know so well. There is an unknown monster to the citizens of Esch-Belval; but not for all, not for those who have lived fully in their past. Therefore, we must return to that past and bring out the good memories to weaken the monster's shadow that is biting the modern city.

The project consists in three phases. It will be asked to BeHave staff if they have the contacts of the people who worked at Esch-Belval. At the same time will be opened a Facebook page to find further contacts of people who have worked in Esch-Belval. To the people will be asked if they have any photographs or videos of the time they worked in the locations of Esch- Belval and if they are willing to lend it for the creation of this project as a collection of visual materials. At the same time It will be asked to leave a comment to the photo or video. What does it mean that picture for him / her? What kind of memories surfaces? What does he think of his past in that work environment? The material and the reminisce will be assembled to create a video-documentary. There will be a pre-residence beginning, then continuing in loco the research of people, interviewing them and collecting their historical documents. For more than a month it will go in search of new people, not just those already contacted. After the first period of collection of the material, moves to the second which is the editing of the video. The assembly consists in a small story of Esch-Belval linked to the city until the 90'ss. It will start with the first photos / video, and at the same time with the telling of the person, their adventures, the emotions that the photo / video still arouses in they. So it will go all the time. The video it's planning to be more than 30 minutes long.

The third stage is the presentation of the video. This will be showed in Esch-Belval building outdoors for one month. The projection time start from the afternoon until 24:00. With that I would like to create an additional link between Esch-Belval and the today citizens. Bring them back to the past, when the structure was alive. To see the stories of their fathers or grandfathers. To create a different intimacy between the structure and the citizens who have not lived it, but they have it right in front of their windows. I do not know, maybe they will start to love it as it is.

"I am real" is a work that needs to be lived through a performative act. All the exhibition space is occupied by dummies lying on the ground in different positions. The mannequins are wearing clothes that give the impression of real people. The public who enters, sees this pile of "people" lying, almost naturally is invited to not only be a transient subject but to attend actively the installation: be part of it by taking his own lying position, mixing with dummies. Shall remain static until the public will perceive that new people are entering into space and are getting closer. At that moment will have to move or get up. So the coming audience, walking around the living and nonliving bodies will embarrass. Going ahead the situation will become harder; the anxiety, the doubt between what is real and what it is not, it creeps. Becomes palpable the indecisiveness to continue in this state of anxiety or to fully live the situation. In the end, the inner query and then the answer, if wants to be part of the game for the next public. In all this, it creates two types of public, those who experienced the work and wants to become the subject of the performative installation and a new public that does not know what is happening and what awaits him.

Mom someone has destroyed the home

"Mom someone has destroyed the home", is a work based on altering the perspective of urban architectural space, through intervention and action. I would like that the viewer entering the space/artwork, become uncomfortable the moment s/he perceives what is taking place: the realization that the entire structure is up in the air with an object that passes through the center of the ceiling. This is the moment in which the situation changes, anxiety takes over the viewer, s/he fears that the building could fall at any moment. After experiencing this s/he cannot decide whether to continue and remain inside to enjoy the artwork, or leave it all behind and exit to where s/he feels safe. The architecture itself loses its previous identity. The same thing happens to the foreign object: the anchor. While it does not serve a purpose within urban architecture, it plays a deconstructive role. The object itself symbolizes an element of security for a ship coming to a stop. Anchored within the urban architecture and not underwater, it loses its original context. Symbolically, the architectural building becomes the pillar of something much “greater”.

<< It is played on the event's whim >>, so Dostoevskij defines gambling. A friend of mine, a 28 years old student (2010), 23 when I met him, is still a college student. In the course of our friendship I discovered his obsession on gambling, I began to realize that something was wrong with him because he was attending college less and less. Gamble had become a refuge for him. I was seeing an avid gambling man and absolutely free attachment to money. The desire to win was becoming a challenge.

A whim's challenge, to have, to risk, against fate. As a desperate he was repeating the same phrase: ''It will not happen again''. Or rather returning to Dostoevsky: << Tomorr ow, tomorrow everything will end >>.

From the experience I had with him, I was pushed to do a research on gambler's way of thinking, to enter their pathology. So to better develop my project I could not do anything else but frequent the various locations such as bars, casinos and bingo. Talking, taking opinions from people. Starting with simple questions: What motivates you to gamble? What's the reason why you are here now? What's the game for you? Etc...

After a long experience, the result is amazing. I collected the opinions of 36 people. Sometimes very short answers like: << I gambling because I don't have s..t to do >> at times << Gambling should be fun, it's nice to win, if you lose sometimes does not matter, the most important thing is health ... but I'd like a big winnings to settle a bit of things ... and see the world >>. And, of course, the opinion of the person who inspired me to take this path. So I developed a wider thought with an interview of 10 questions and answers. The main interest of the research is to continue it and give it an institutional progression. Creating a focus with the institutions that deal with gamblers who are in care, and analyze their approach. Also analyze the Italian legislative aspects, as in 2014 Italy began to apply stricter rules for those who abuse game. This is enough, or needs more? The aim is to create a visual documentary – video.

Project - the research started in 2010. It has had development in the various cities areas of Milan (Italy) during the same year. There are 36 different gamblers opinions. Under each opinion are pointed out the gamblers details as the name (not for all), age and sex. The conclusion has reached to an interview of 10 questions and answers with a person of 28 years old. It speaks only of gambling.

The common areas of the city becomes home, an open shelter. A phenomenon that has populated our cities worldwide. Very often as a life choice, to run away from the exaggerated consumerism or to try different experiences. Such as George Orwell, the writer who at a later time gave birth to Big Brother in the novel "1984", which described this experience in his debut "Down and Out in Paris and London". But we know that, for most, the homeless condition derives from a precarious socio-economic scenario, the loss of their house, their work and other similar situations. This means that the person is in desperate condition, in which loses any kind of support, even from its family. So his condition becomes survival, until one day something will gives him the hope of resuming his previous life. The photo ''soon the sun will rise'' is part of a research that dates back to 2008, a period in which, during the night, I was spending a lot of time turning streets all over Milan. What struck me were the homeless, their visual impact together with the urban architecture; by this I began to document this phenomenon sometimes by accident and sometimes going to search for them. This specific photo was taken in front of a store in Corso Vittorio Emanuele in Milan. There is an empty shop window in a full sales period, in front of it a person is spending the night. The consumer goods and the ''nonexistence'' creates a dualistic harmony. The life and death creates a irrational balance inside a supposed reality. Apart from the fact that in 2008 there is the bubble of the banks burst, leading to a global economic crisis. The most vulnerable social classes where the most affected by the crisis, taking them to collapse. Individuals and families who lost their goods. In the following years the suicide phenomenon has increased dramatically. Many people ends with nothing in their hands, and the road becomes their choice of life. Although we are seeing a slight socio-economic upturn, the homeless phenomenon will be always contemporary. The photo is a print of 8 meters by 4 meters. It will be prepared on facade scaffolding, down the street. In some parts of the scaffolding will be placed some boxes that will transmit a person's snoring. So the artwork is not only visual, but automatically its also become auditive. It involves people passing through.
